Here, finally, is a (roughly) one-hour video of one of the finest orchestrions
ever built. Boring-- it isn't! From any standpoint of either physical beauty,
dazzling performances, innovative special lighting, or straightforward
ease of tuning and maintainability, this instrument has few, if any, equals.
Frankly, it is just amazing on this tape-- even more when viewing in person.
It is probably the largest self-contained orchestrion ever built in the
United States which operates without speakers or electronics effects, and
uses strictly acoustic instrumentation. It is capable of playing either
orchestrion rolls or MIDI files. (Samples - Click Here)
In this presentation, you will see and hear SofI (the "Spirit of Independence")
perform and in between songs Craig Brougher explains various aspects of the instrument
and spices it all up with his own jocular style of Missouri humor.
This is probably one of the most worthwhile DVD's you will ever own,
and certainly one you will want to view again and again, to have on file
for reference, as well as pure entertainment. You won't be disappointed!
SofI (pronounced 'Sophie') has already set a new standard for the orchestrions
to come, and has been honored by other experts in the field, such as George
Bogatko and Stephen Kent Goodman as one of the finest instruments ever
built -- in any age.
